Nobody gets excited about dental X-rays. Even the name sounds a little scary to some people. We get it. When someone says “radiation,” ears perk up, and questions pop into their heads.
At Kildaire Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we hear those questions all the time. “Are X-rays really necessary?” “How much radiation are we talking about here?” “Is it safe for my kids?” Those are fair questions. And we’ve got good answers. Digital X-rays have changed everything about dental imaging. They’re faster, clearer, and way safer than the old-school kind.

The Old Way vs. Our Way
Back in the day, dental X-rays used film. You know, like the film cameras from before smartphones existed. That film needed more radiation to capture a usable image. Patients held those stiff, uncomfortable tabs in their mouths while the technician stepped behind a wall. Then everyone waited for the film to develop.
Digital X-rays work completely differently. We use a small electronic sensor that captures the image instantly. There’s no waiting. No chemicals for developing. And most importantly, we use up to 90% less radiation than those old film X-rays.
Let us say that again. Up to 90% less radiation.
What That Means for You
To put it in perspective, a full set of digital dental X-rays exposes you to about the same amount of radiation as a short airplane flight. Or a few days of just living on Earth, getting natural background radiation from the sun.
We’re not talking about a lot here. And we’re definitely not talking about the kind of high-dose radiation that people worry about from CT scans or cancer treatments. Dental X-rays are already low-dose. Digital makes them ultra-low-dose.
But we don’t stop there. We also use lead aprons and thyroid collars on every patient who wants them. For kids, pregnant patients, and anyone who just feels better with that extra layer, we’ve got it ready every single time.
The Real Benefit No One Talks About
Digital X-rays aren’t just safer. They’re also better at helping us find problems early.
The images pop up on our screen in seconds, not minutes. We can zoom in, adjust the brightness, and see details that old film would miss entirely. Tiny cavities between teeth. Early signs of gum disease. The very beginning of an infection at the tip of a root.
Finding those things early means smaller fillings, easier treatments, and less time in our chair. That’s a win for everyone.
Seeing Is Believing
We also use digital X-rays right there in the room with you. There’s no sending film off to a darkroom. You get to see what we see. We can point to the screen and say, “Right there, that’s what we’re watching.”
That kind of transparency builds trust. Our patients don’t have to take our word for it. They can look at the image themselves.
How Often Do Patients Really Need X-rays?
Not every appointment needs X-rays. For a patient with healthy teeth and no problems, we might take bitewing X-rays once a year. New patients get a full series so we have a complete picture of their mouth. Kids, patients with gum disease, or folks with a history of cavities might need them more often.
Every patient is different. We decide together based on your specific situation.
