We’ve all been there. You’re biting into something, and suddenly you feel something odd. Maybe it’s a sharp edge where there wasn’t one before. Maybe your tooth has been aching off and on for weeks. Whatever the sign, you know that tooth isn’t quite right. At Kildaire Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we see this all the time. A patient comes in worried about a tooth that’s seen better days. And more often than not, a dental crown is exactly what they need to get back to normal.

What Exactly Is a Dental Crown?
Think of a crown like a helmet for your tooth. It fits right over the top, covering everything above the gumline. Once it’s on, you can’t tell where the real tooth ends and the crown begins. It looks natural, feels smooth, and works just like a regular tooth.
We recommend crowns in a few different situations. Maybe a tooth has a cavity that’s too big for a simple filling. Maybe a tooth cracked or broke. or Maybe a patient just finished a root canal, and that tooth needs protection. Crowns also hold dental bridges in place or cover up a dental implant.
The Old Way vs. Our Way
A lot of people remember their parents or grandparents getting crowns back in the day. Those appointments took forever. Patients wore temporary crowns for weeks. The whole process felt like a drag.
That’s not how we do things anymore.
We use digital technology that speeds everything up. Instead of goopy impression material that makes you gag, we capture a digital scan of your tooth. It’s fast, comfortable, and way more accurate. That scan gets sent to a lab that crafts your custom crown. In about two weeks, you come back, and we bond it in place for good.
What Patients Can Expect
First, we numb the area so you don’t feel a thing. Then we reshape the tooth just a little to make room for the crown. We take our digital scan, place a temporary crown to protect your tooth, and send you on your way. The whole appointment usually takes about an hour.
Then comes a waiting period. Your custom crown gets made just for you. The lab matches the shade to your surrounding teeth so everything blends perfectly. This takes about two weeks.
When you come back, we remove the temporary crown and check how your permanent crown fits. Once we’re all happy with it, we bond it firmly in place. You could walk out with a fully restored smile.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
With good care, crowns can last 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer. The secret is treating them like natural teeth. Brush twice a day. Floss once a day. Come see us for regular checkups. That’s really all there is to it.
Crowns themselves don’t get cavities, but the tooth underneath still can. That’s why cleaning around the gumline matters so much.
Signs You Might Need a Dental Crown
Not sure if a crown is in your future? Here are some clues:
- A tooth that hurts when you bite down
- A visible fracture or chip that keeps getting bigger
- A tooth with a large filling that’s starting to fail
- A tooth that’s had a root canal (those get brittle over time)
If any of that sounds familiar, don’t wait. Small problems are easier to fix than big ones.
