A missing tooth matters more than most people realize. Sure, it affects how a smile looks. But it also changes how you chew, speak, and feel about yourself. Even one gap can throw off an entire bite. At Kildaire Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we help patients explore their options for replacing missing teeth. Two of the most common choices are dental bridges and dental implants. Both work well. Both have their place. The right one depends on the patient and their situation.

What Is a Dental Bridge and Is It Right for You? in Cary, NC

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge does pretty much what the name suggests. It bridges the gap left by one or more missing teeth. The bridge is made of a few connected dental crowns. The crowns on each end anchor to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Those anchor teeth are called abutments. The middle crown, called a pontic, fills the space where the missing tooth used to be.

Once it’s cemented in place, the bridge looks and functions like a row of natural teeth. Nobody can tell where it starts and ends.

When a Bridge Makes Sense

Bridges work best in certain situations.

How a Bridge Compares to an Implant

Implants replace the entire tooth, root and all. They stimulate the jawbone and prevent bone loss. With good care, they can last a lifetime. But they require surgery and take several months from start to finish.

Bridges replace the visible part of the tooth. They don’t stimulate the bone underneath, so some bone loss can happen over time. They typically last 10 to 15 years. The process is faster and doesn’t involve surgery.

Neither option is better overall. They’re just different. We walk through both with every patient and help them choose what fits their life.

What to Expect During the Process at Kildaire Family & Cosmetic Dentistry

Getting a bridge takes a few appointments.

Caring for a Bridge

Bridges need a little extra attention. Since the pontic sits above the gumline, food can get trapped underneath. We show every patient how to floss under the bridge using a special threader or interdental brush. This keeps your gums healthy and helps prevent decay on the anchor teeth.

Brush twice a day. Floss daily. Come see us for regular checkups. That’s the routine.
