What Are Dental Implants?

Modern dentistry is a marvel—and we’re not just saying that because we’re in the dental field! When someone has something they want to change about their smile or has a dental issue they need to get fixed, there are more options than ever, not to mention better solutions available. And dental implants are a perfect example of just that!

The Basics

A dental implant is a way to replace teeth that closely imitates the structure and function of a natural tooth. For example, while dentures sit on top of your gums, dental implants are secured into the bone like how a tooth root secures an actual tooth.

Dental implants are made up of three main pieces: the screw or post (which acts as the root), the abutment (which functions as a connector), and the restoration or crown (which is the part that actually looks like a tooth).

Getting a dental implant is divided up into two stages. First, the post is placed and then that surgery area is left to heal. Then, once everything is healed and fully secure, the connector and dental crown are placed on top.

The Benefits

Dental implants come with plenty of benefits. First, they’re fixed in place, which means no worrying about them slipping out or having to take them out to clean them. Just treat them like you do all your other teeth with normal brushing and flossing! They’re also made to look and feel natural, which makes for easier chewing and speaking. Dental implants are also designed for longevity so you can enjoy your new and improved smile for years to come.
