Foods That Are Good for Teeth

You are what you eat, and so are your teeth. Take care of them by eating these healthy foods.

Celery, Carrots & Apples

Celery, carrots and apples are all incredibly fibrous foods. When you eat these vegetables and fruit raw, their fibrous strings act like toothbrushes by washing away the food particles and bad bacteria in your mouth. By simply chewing them you are also increasing your saliva flow, which is vital for remineralizing your teeth to make your enamel stronger and wash away anything bad. The fibrous strings also stimulate your gums and celery and carrots are high in vitamin A, which promotes gum health. Celery also has vitamin C which can reduce inflammation in the mouth.

Leafy Greens

You probably already know that leafy green vegetables like kale, broccoli and spinach are good for your health, but they are also great for your teeth. Low in calories and without any starches or sugars, leafy greens are also high in vitamins and minerals that are vital for your oral health, such as vitamin C, vitamin B and folic acid. They’re also full of calcium, which strengthens tooth enamel and prevents cavities. Like celery, carrots and apples, leafy greens are also very high in fiber so they help wash away all the bad stuff in your mouth and increase your saliva production.

Yogurt & Cheese

These dairy products are packed full with calcium and protein, two minerals that are vital for strengthening your tooth enamel and therefore keeping tooth decay at bay. Yogurt is also high in probiotics, also known as good bacteria, that can supplant the bad bacteria in your mouth, again reducing the risk of developing cavities. Cheese meanwhile can raise the pH level in your mouth, which means the environment in your mouth will become less hospitable to bad bacteria. Chewing cheese also helps with stimulating saliva production. Be sure not to choose yogurt varieties that are high in sugar, and remember that it’s important to eat cheese in moderation.

Almonds

Almonds are a great snack for your teeth. High in calcium and protein and low in sugar, these nuts can help you build your tooth enamel without putting you at risk for cavities. They’re great to enjoy on their own or in a salad or even a smoothie. Just be sure to drink water after you’ve eaten them because they can sometimes get stuck in your teeth.
