Should I Use an Electric Toothbrush?

At Kildaire Family Dental, we understand that our patients and their families lead busy lives. With so much to do, it can be hard to keep up with the latest in dental technology and make sure that you’re buying the right supplies for your family.

Many of our patients ask us whether they should be using an electric toothbrush. Our answer is often, “It depends.” For some diligent patients, a conventional toothbrush may do the trick, while others may want the extra edge that an electric toothbrush provides. Read on as we break down the pros and con of an electric toothbrush!

1. Technique

Technique matters when it comes to brushing teeth – if you’re doing it wrong, you’re wasting your time! You should use a brush with soft bristles (medium and firm bristles can damage your enamel and gums). You’ll also want to gently brush for two minutes, twice daily.

Pro of Electric Toothbrush

An electric toothbrush may make brushing easier, as it takes over much of the brushing motion for you.

2. Time

Even if folks are brushing their teeth twice daily, often they’re not spending the necessary amount of time brushing. Brushing more vigorously to finish more quickly doesn’t work, and actually damages your teeth.

Pro of Electric Toothbrush

Conveniently, many electric toothbrushes come equipped with a two-minute timer that ensures that you are brushing for the right amount of time.

3. Cost

While conventional toothbrushes are only a few bucks, electric toothbrushes can run up to $100.

Con of Electric Toothbrush

Although electric toothbrushes may make brushing easier and more fun, you’ll have to weigh the additional cost and decide if it’s a good investment for your individual dental needs.
